Robredo very quick -- ALAM

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo was so quick in acting on the mystery behind the text message that led an alleged “drug lord” to shoot Daily Tribune reporter Fernan Angeles seven times in the evening of last March 11.

This was all what Alab ng Mamamahayg (ALAM) can say of Robredo yesterday for the speedy action on the issue that arose out of the message posted by Fernan on his Facebook at 10:21 a.m. of March 21, 2012.

The reporter assigned to cover Malacañang questioned who leaked to the shooter his confidential text message when all Fernan knew he “texted” only one person, General Francisco Soria Manalo, Jr., director of the Eastern Police District.

In that FB post, Fernan said that at the time of the posting he was about to be operated to remove the last and seventh bullet that got embedded near his spinal column and he may not be able to survive.

He added that it was a bonus life for him to write the FB post on his left hand as his right has been paralyzed by the bullets and he was taking the “only” opportunity for him to reveal the truth why he was shot by the alleged drug kingpin in their neighborhood.

He continued that in the same message, he informed General Manalo in confidence that one Faisal Sangcopan was arrested over a half-a-kilo shabu and two “high-end” guns but was released after shelling out half-a-million pesos.

He added in that FB post that 14 hours after he sent the text message, Faisal and cohorts met him just outside the Angeles compound in Pinagbuhatan, Pasig when the reporter went out at 10:00 p.m. of March 11 to buy a cellular phone load to send his stories to his newspaper.

Fernan’s wife said her husband told her that Faisal immediately drew a gun and emptied the magazine on him.  A cohort identified by Fernan as “Basare” also fired shots supposedly from a .38 caliber.

In that Facebook page, Fernan said:

“I was shot by a group of men led by the very subject that I reported to him (Manalo). Interesting, how that very subject Faisal traced the leak of such info? Another reason I texted Manalo of my discovery was for me to at least be objective on news which many refer to as very alarming only to be used as an instrument by a high-profile police officer in trying to recover what looks like his share from the huge loot that his cops took from Faisal.”

After having been fully informed, in the presence of ALAM president Atty. Berteni “Toto” Cataluña Causing Secretary Robredo right there and then called Manalo over a cellular phone and confronted the general, who admitted having received the message from Fernan.

Manalo reasoned out he forwarded the message to Pasig City chief of police Supt. Jessie L. Cardona because the general was already relieved from his post as he was retiring at the time.

Immediately, Robredo called up Cardona and the latter confirmed the text message sent him by Manalo who also asked him to act on it.

However, Cardona said he gave the job to his subordinates.

Hearing this, Robredo ordered Cardona to submit a full report detailing what happened, who were the persons involved and what actions he did from the time he received the text message from Manalo.

In his instruction to Cardona, Robredo said: “I want to get to the bottom of this. Kung sino dapat kakasuhan, kakasuhan at i-relieve.”

ALAM chairman Jerry S. Yap, who is also the president of the National Press Club, praised Robredo for being quick and real-time, acting on the problem as it was being presented.

Yap also praised Robredo for ordering Cardona to stop issuing press statements because the press conferences held by the EPD were not even founded on evidence.

“Instead of resolving the issue, it has muddled the investigation,” Atty. Causing quoted Robredo as telling Cardona
