‘WE LOVE THE ENVIRONMENT, TOO’ -- US Navy contractor CEO

PRESS STATEMENT OF GLENN DEFENSE MARINE
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER VICE ADMIRAL (RETIRED) MATEO M. MAYUGA
ON TOXIC WASTE ALLEGEDLY DUMPED INTO
SUBIC BAY
Vice Admiral (Retired) Mateo M. Mayuga

‘WE LOVE THE ENVIRONMENT, TOO’

We in Glenn Defense Marine Asia Philippines love the environment, too. We will not shirk from our moral and personal obligations to keep it from destruction, much more the waters that give us life, particularly our business that thrives on seas.

We assure the Filipino people, the Philippines and the United States of America that we will never do such an act of dumping toxic and other chemical wastes into the sea because we know this will damage our business where we get our life.

We know that our capital in our business is not only our technical and equipment capability but also our reputation and moral standing to the environment-loving community.

We also know that aside from getting ostracized  there is a very heavy penalty that goes with the act of dumping wastes into the bay.  Knowing these unbearable consequences and the fact that it is much easier to follow the rules, why should we do such forbidden act?

We welcome full-dressed investigations into the allegations that our ship dumped into the Subic Bay the wastes we collected from US naval ship USS Emory S. Land during the recent Visiting Forces Agreement exercise in the Philippines.

We are very much confident we will come out clean even in the most assiduous investigation. And if ever it will prove that toxic waste were indeed dumped, it cannot come from us.

We know it is also possible that if indeed the bay waters show intolerable level of toxicity, there were other possible sources, other ships and tributaries that empty into the bay.  For sure, fingerprinting will show wastes different from those we collected from USS Emory S. Land.

We finally appeal for coolness and a stop at fingerpointing until the SBMA investigations are completed.    This we do because this is more of a moral issue than legal and we believe in our innocence. We are entitled to justice and vindication, too.

Please be assured that our CEO is Vice Admiral (retired) Mateo M. Mayuga, once the head of the Philippine Navy that is one of the instrumentalities that watch the seas from marine life hazards.  He has been an advocate of cleaner seas. He was involved in  a joint save-the-sea project (Pollution Control) between the navies of Indonesia and the Philippines.
